The Nizhny Novgorod region is located in the central part of the vast East European plain. Flowing through the region the Volga river is a visible border between the left bank (Zavolzhye) and the right bank, which is a continuation of the Volga upland. The peculiarity of the relief is highly developed micro-relief: steppe miner depression (pods), overgrown with birch, aspen and larch.

The topography of the right bank definitely differs from the left bank due to the significant elevation changes. Exceeding level of the upper part of Nizhny Novgorod above the level of the Oka and the Volga is 50-60 m. The Oka and the Volga slopes have long been known as a scenic place with the forest view on the left bank. The Oka and the Volga rivers as well as scarred with ravines slopes give beauty to the landscape.

The Nizhny Novgorod region is located on the site of the platform cover with relatively shallow basement (south-eastern part of the region) and the phase distribution platform cover plate with the capacity more than 2000 m, that is with the deep contour interval (the rest of the field) .

It is noted in the article that the Nizhny Novgorod Volga region belongs to the areas which are more favorable for the different ethnogenetic processes. Here there are three natural zones - taiga, mixed forests, forest-steppe. It provides a special attraction for the people and gives them a wide range of choices concerning the type of farming, the main occupations ensuring economic growth. It also serves as the basis for the competitive struggle of the different ethnic groups for this territory.
