The interview was carried out during the week with first and second year students of non-language specialties studying at the following faculties: faculty of Electrical Engineering; faculty of energetics, transport and marine technologies; aircraft faculty; faculty of cadastre and construction; faculty of computing technologies; faculty of ecology and chemical technology. In general, 427 people were interviewed.
The questionnaires of participants included the following questions: what place the English language occupies among other disciplines, the need to study a foreign language for making a career, the purpose of studying a foreign language at university, training abroad. The following results were received:
English among other subjects: 1st place –8 persons, 2 place –24 persons; 3rd place - 39 persons; 4th place – 59 persons; 5th–45persons; 6th place –59persons; 7th-33persons, 8th place – 29 persons, 9th place – 12 persons; 10 place – 4 persons.
172 students responded that a foreign language is necessary for their future career, 148 answered negatively.
280 students expressed their desire to undergo training abroad, 75 responded negatively.
Talking about the purpose of studying a foreign language at the university students gave different answers. 11 persons – work abroad; 170 persons–for self-development, 57 persons – for a future career; 41 persons – according to a plan of study; 40 persons –to communicate with foreign people ; 20 persons – English is the international language; 17 persons-working with foreign equipment , programs.
On the basis of received data we can conclude that a foreign language is in the great demand among students of non-language specialties and it is one of the most important subject.
