We all love to combine business with pleasure, so I decided to combine my hobby – games, with its specialization – religious studies. Many will be the question: "how do diversion, may contain some information? Yes, and information about such an interesting subject as religion?". I hasten to answer that with the advancement of technology the games are becoming more realistic, and because of the flexibility of the computer (in our case), the Creator gets the widest set to create not just games, but the whole "universe".

The universe, in this sense, is rather a set of laws, conditions, restrictions, etc., created by the Creator of the game. That is why the player in video games is often in space, in the story of a popular book, and even in parallel universes! Large developers, in order to lure and leave the audience in their product carefully working out their universe, adding something ordinary, and sometimes something quite unusual.

Here we proceed to consider one of these universes – The Elder Scrolls. The game is in the fantasy genre with its universe and detailed world. We will consider the world only from one side-religious as consideration of others will demand too much time.

And Yes, I was not mistaken, in this game universe there is a well-developed, prescribed religion that lives and develops with the game itself. But let's start in order.

Religion of Tamriel (the name of the game world), is the religion of the "Nine Deities". At its core, this religion is polytheistic. In the game world there are nine major gods: Akatosh, DiBella, Arkay, Zenithar, Mara, Stendarr, Kynareth, and Talos. If we talk about their meaning and power, they are gods, embodying the best human qualities such as mercy(Stendarr), love(Mara), beauty(Dibell). In addition, they can be patrons in the Affairs of war, trade and work; even creatures, Akatosh is the dragon God that controls time.

One of the features of religion spread to all 9 continents of the vast world, which is home to a variety of races who create their own pantheons, adding new or replacing the old, depending on their own mentality, culture, features of the territory. For example, Altmer (or high elves) – there is a strong cult of ancestors. In it, they do not distinguish the gods from their ancestors, who are considered more powerful ancestors. In total, there are several pantheons in the game: Altmer, Bosmer, Dunmer, Falmer, ailed, Kaji, Imperial, Nord, Breton, yokudan.

The next feature can surely be called dualism. So, at the beginning of the universe Something existed, and from it was born Aurubis – chaos, emptiness. It invaded the brothers Anu and Padomay, who are in different pantheons are called by many is – Is Not, Satak-Akel, but the most available to the player are Anuiel – Sithis. These entities appear as Order and Chaos, respectively. Together they created NIR (or Nirn) – space. After Akatosh appeared and began the count of time began to Dawn Era. Something similar can be seen in some religions and beliefs. Dualism on this does not end and during the journey of the main character will meet Daedra(demons) and Aedra(ancestors), which appeared in the battle between Anu and Padomay. These gods (let's for convenience, let's call them so) will direct, monitor character and otherwise exploit and, despite the rather simple separation of the "bad-good", the gods will be ambiguous. In the world of the Elder Scrolls there is no absolute good, evil. In it there is a balance that is supported by the gods themselves. The game has a lot of literature that opens your eyes to both the creation and the existence of The world of the Elder Scrolls as a whole. In the example of the existence of balance I will give a small excerpt from the in-game book "deities and cults of Tamriel»:

"Anything, ranging from legendary achievements and ending with the everyday life of the inhabitants of Tamriel, not traced a pattern of divine intervention. Rather, the thoughts of the gods appear to be unrelated to the current cares of the mortal world or, at best, not limited to them. However, there are exceptions.

Many historical records and legends point to the direct intervention of one or more gods in times of extreme need. »

(By Brother Hetchfeld)

Turning to divine intervention, it is worth mentioning henotheism among the population, each village, city has its own patron, whom they worship. Yes, and the main character in the game offers the choice of a deity for which he improves them in-game characteristics and it does not contradict the rules of the gods, as our hero is often chosen gods.

Finishing my article, I would like to say that any art, and games — it is art, in my opinion, reflects our reality in all its aspects. It used to be, so it is now. That is why in the game there are a variety of "parody" religion and politics in her attitude. So on a Concordat of White Gold in a game worship of Talos was forbidden, it served also in the beginning of civil war in the country. Summing up, we can say about the importance of studying religion and not to transfer the game into reality.
