Lester Square

Lester Square is in the heart of the entertainment district: this pedestrian area borders both Covent Garden and Soho, next to Chinatown. There are five huge cinemas, nightclubs, casinos, restaurants - in the evenings the square is full of people. It is named after the second Earl of Leicester, who built a house here in 1635, Leicester House. The count in front of him fenced off, depriving the public of the parishioners of the church of St. Martin in the fields. They turned to King Charles I, and after a special trial, Lord Lester was ordered to open a piece of land for the people. Around the house, others were gradually built, the square was formed. It became a fashionable place: Leicester House was the residence of members of the royal and other noble families. In the center of the square stood a gilded statue of George I. In 1775, the collector Ashton Lever opened a museum of "natural and other wonders" at Leicester House. Eight years later, a surgeon and scientist John Hunter, who housed a collection of 14,000 plant and animal products (later it became the foundation of the Hunterian Museum), settled in the square. In 1851, an unprecedented attraction opened on Leicester Square: a giant hollow globe 18 meters in diameter. Inside, the Earth's surface was modeled, and people, entering through the Pacific Ocean, climbed the stairs and inspected the continents. The success was deafening, but then the novelty became boring, in 1862 the globe was dismantled. The attractiveness of the square as a center of near-scientific entertainment has passed. Leicester Square grew overgrown with debris. The statue of George I was defeated by hooligans. This worried the parliament, and in the end the square was ennobled, the square was divided, decorated with sculptures. Now, after the last reconstruction, there was only a white marble fountain with Shakespeare's statue: the bard in a capricious pose is standing on a high pedestal, surrounded by dolphins. The statue of Giovanni Fontana, executed in 1874, replicates the sculpture of William Kent in the corner of the poets of Westminster Abbey. Subsequently, Leicester Square was once again littered - during the "winter of discontent" of 1978-79, when the unions fought against the government (as a result Margaret Thatcher came to power). Workers of many industries, including scavengers, went on strike, and Leicester Square was literally piled with garbage bags. In the people it was called "Fester Square" ("rotting area"). Now the name of the square is a symbol of entertainment. Among the local institutions, the main thing, perhaps, is one of the largest cinemas in London, the Odeon, built in 1937. Here, behind the recognizable façade of polished black granite, European and world premieres are often held. From the side of Leicester Street, in a small building with a clock and a signboard TKTS sell "burning" theater tickets for half the price. It is necessary to beware of the numerous fake cash desks that arise on the square: real tickets - only at TKTS.
