Everything that surrounds people affects them. Simple shapes or complex shapes, round forms or forms with corners – all these are perceived by people in different ways. Architecture affects human livelihood, emotions, behavior, thoughts and mood. Sometimes the area around the person may cause discomfort or, on the contrary, contribute to health and help to concentrate. This influence can be unnoticed but it always exists. Everything around us is made up of various geometric shapes and it influences on human psychology. So it’s very important for architects to know how all these affect human and how the knowledge can be used in life to improve it.

Some years ago the group of scientists made some experiments that show the influence of architecture on human. And the first experiment was about types of furniture. People were put into 2 rooms. The first room had a lot of angle shaped furniture and the second one had fluent shaped furniture. As a result the second room was liked more by people, it made them feel more comfortable and relaxed.

The second experiment was about the colour of inner walls. Scientists again put group of people into 2 rooms. One room had the red walls and the other one had blue walls. And the difference was great. When people were in the red condition – they were surrounded by walls of the stop-sign colour, that was associated with danger and it made them more aware. People had better reaction, paid more attention to details and their thoughts were more logical. But people in the blue room were better in deals where they need to use imagination. So blue room had creative atmosphere.

The next experiment was connected with height of ceilings. People in the room with high ceilings were better in thinking about something in common. They felt more freedom so it helped them to behave more freely and easily. But people in the room with low ceilings had better concentration on details, were thinking more logically and they were a bit stiffly.

It is also important to tell about influence of shapes on human. And the last experiment gives some information about it. About 200 people participated in this experiment. Everyone got pictures of buildings that are based on different forms. They were asked to imagine like they are inside the picture and instantly tell about their feelings.

And there are the results:

  1. Round shape tells about desire to move and dance, desire to be alone;

  2. Arch gives feeling of concentration, privacy, communication with inner world;

  3. Triangular form means desire to work hard, to concentrate and desire to spend time with friends and family;

  4. Straight rectangular form supposes mental activity, tension, negative emotions;

  5. Cube causes concentration, seriousness, logic;

  6. Pyramid tells about desire to develop and achieve more goals;

  7. Curved line means feeling of harmony, desire to develop and travel.

In conclusion I want to say that our life depends on the world around us a lot. Architectural area affects people activities, emotions and even decisions. Psychology of architecture is one of the main things that influences on society behavior. And it is very important for architects not only to make some beautiful structures but take into consideration how shapes, colours and many other aspects will be perceived by people. So it is necessary to know the psychology of architecture not to make mistakes in design and to improve our world.
